F-1::Rainy Malaysian GP

It was a rainy topsy turvy Malaysian GP. The results were unexpected too with Ferrari & Alonso getting a surprise victory. It was amazing to see Narian Karthikeyan in 10th place when the race was stopped due to dangerous conditions.

Hamilton got off to a good restart but was caught out by a smart bit of pit strategy by Ferrari & Sauber which saw Alonso & Perez leap frog Hamilton in the pits. Hamilton was held back by a red light due to Massa coming it and hence could not get away cleanly post his stop. Sauber was the surprise as Perez was able to make the most of the opportunity. He even mounted an challenge to Alonso in the closing stages before settling for the 2nd. The race pace was amazingly quick and the performance was maintained when he switched to slicks where he was running consistently quicker than others in the field. While for Alonso it was clear that the car was not as good on slicks as it was on the intermediate.

Vettel & Button both had a miserable race. On track collisions caused them both to dive into the pits early and drop back. With the mid-field improving by leaps and the race conditions being tricky made it difficult for both of them to move up the ladder. Vettel finished 11th & Button 14th. Radio transmissions at the closing laps showed that Vettel was facing reliability issues on his car with RBR making him stop midway on the last lap.

McLaren keeps the lead in the WCC while Alonso leads the WDC by 5 points from Hamilton. Hamilton was disappointing. He was doing good while in the lead, but once he lost those places he was never really in contention. Mercedes disappointed again as they were not able to keep the qualifying pace in the race. With the car being tough on the tyres, Michael Schumacher managed a solitary point for them.

Kimi Raikonnen was good in his Lotus steering it to a solid 5th position. If the Lotus team can find some extra pace and handling capabilities, Kimi will be up on the front challenging. The midfield is the place where there is a real tough fight going on. Torro Rosso, Sahara Force India are challenging each other and the top teams on a consistent basis.
