Don 2 - No need to Chase

Caught Don 2 on Friday. First day last show... caught the movie @ 10 in Inox Pune. I could never resist a freebie. When my friend called with the news that he had a free pass for Don 2 I just couldn't resist. Having watched Don - The Original starring Amitabh, Don - The Chase Begins the first part in this series by Farhan Akhtar, I was expecting something which will continue the story of Don ahead.

While I admit the movie is slick enough to be on par with Hollywood and the action sequences are good enough, the movie had no story as such. The plot meandered from Malaysia to Berlin. Akhtar tries to fit in Mission Impossible, Ocean's Series and what not into the movie.

Shahrukh just doesn't get into the character of Don. The ruthless man played so efforlessly by Big B in the original is still an hallmark. With the new Don being turned into a franchise, Shahrukh disappoints, his expressions are frustratingly similar, he hemms & hawws his dialogues causing them to lose the edge and panache.

Dialogues like mentione below don't help the cause too...

Don: "Kyun Mujhe Goli Marogi"
Roma: "Don't Temp Me"

Another gem:
Don: "Don ke Dushman jab tak apni phehli chaal chalte hain, Don apni agli chaal chal chuka hota hai"

sounds corny and pathetic... In fact that was the emphatic comment made by my friend when he such dialogues...

Priyanka Chopra does not come across as cool & sauve as Zeenat Aman came across in the old Don. That she's an interpol officer now who's in charge of catching Don is just an icing on the cake. Nowhere does a person feel that she's interested in catching Don or there is an intensity about her which has made catching Don a priority in life, most of the time when Roma comes across Don she's moon stuck or love lorn.. cudn't differentiate between the expressions.

Om Puri is wasted as Mallik, he's about to retire only to be amazed that Don has surrendered and made his life more miserable than before.

Boman Irani as Vardhan tries to the diabolical villan to match Don, but his expressions are frustratingly limited to scowling and glaring. Hard to believe this is the same guy who played Lucky Singh & Dr. Asthana in the Munna Bhai series.

I don't about the rest, but for me Don 2 fell short of what it could have been. IMO people need not waste money on watching it in theater, just wait for the movie to come on the satellite screen which it will come by Feb or March 2012.

I just hope Akhtar wraps up Don franchise with this. I'm not gonna chase down another Don movie in theaters.
