Comic Wars: Captain America: Civil War v/s Batman v Superman

Captain America: Civil War is out and is going great guns. It's raining super heros in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) and DCCU (D.C. Cinemantic Universe)

It's a war for highest grossing movies between these two traditional comic foes fought on the cinematic front.

MCU is leading currently, as they have the first movers advantage in the market. The MCU is well planned with introduction story lines for Iron-Man, Captain America, The Hulk setting up the franchise in a come all movie - The Avengers. Also every movie released contains some or the other plot point which sets up and ties together the series in general.

In parallel, the DCCU - seems to have been put out in a rush to combat the MCU. The origin story for Batman and Superman was well set with Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy and the Man of Steel reboot, but D.C has not been able to tie the story line between these franchises together.

Coming to the two latest offerings from both DCCU and MCU, they are both - a one vs the other fight stories. While the Batman v Supermen puts the two biggest names in DC universe in a straight fight against one another, the Captain America is more of a fight between two different teams - One led by the Captain and the other by Iron Man.

In the DC movie, the confrontation between Batman and Superman seems almost forced. Superman having a problem with a vigilante when he himself is one seems a bit too far fetched. Also the Metahumans - DCs super powered heros are not introduced except for snippets of AquaMan, Wonder Woman, Cyborg and Flash. DC needs to spend the time and effort to get the origins stories for these main players in place before catapulting The Justice League. Also there needs to be a better way to meld together the movies from one to another, a common thread which ties the movies within the universes together. The high point in the Batman v Superman movie was the Wonder Woman, she just set the stage on fire with her appearance when she emerged to fight Doomsday. Darksied is hinted by DC, but it would have been a shot in the arm if he could have been shown similar to how Thanos was teased by Marvel at the end of the first Avenger movie.

Coming to Captain America, the movie felt more like a filler to set up the stage for the Black Panther and the upcoming movies for Ant Man and SpiderMan. Again the confrontation between the Cap and Tony seemed forced. Tony Stark bowing to government regulation is the last thing I expected. Also nobody suspected the Winter Soldier being setup seemed a bit far fetched. The movie teased everybody except Thor and the Hulk, with them in play, it could have been a Avenger movie instead of a Captain America movie. The thematic setup for Black Panther was amazing, it makes anticipate for the Black Panther movie which was what Marvel wanted I guess. The SpiderMan character was given a lot of air time and the casting looks perfect. Toby McGuire as Spidey was a bit too old and introvert and did not bring out the essence of SpiderMan, but the casting of Tom Holland as Spidey, brings a zing to the character and the banter that he engages in during the fight at the airport is entertaining as hell. The reboot for the franchise with a Tony Stark pinch should set up the series well.

Overall comparing MCU and DCCU would be unfair as MCU has had a advantage - the first mover as well as the interconnected way in which they plan their movies. The DCCU is currently playing catch-up and not doing such a good job at it, what the DCCU needs is to take their time and set the Cinematic Universe with long term in mind rather than short term gains and box office collections, the DCCU has a plethora of great characters which can be brought into the big screen, but it will need time and patience. They can take a leaf out of Marvel's playbook and start using the small screen to put in important fillers or junction between the two movies that the MCU does by using the Agents of Shield & the Agent Carter series.

All in all for the superhero community it is fun times...
