Political Hara-kiri

The Grand Alliance or the Maha-Yuti in Maharashtra is in shambles or it seems like that. With just days to go for the elections, the two main opposition parties the BJP and the Shiv Sena are busy fighting each other for the number of seats each will fight on. This fight is stretching the alliance to the brink of shattering and is giving the Congress-NCP the escape route to survive in the process.

There is a famous dialog in the movie Sholay, in which Thakur says “लोहा गरम है। मार दो हथोडा” It means that the time is appropriate, it’s time to pounce. The Congress-NCP has been decimated in the recently concluded General Elections, the MNS of Raj Thackeray was also a non-player in the same, the star of the Shiv Sena –BJP led Grand Alliance in Maharashtra is on the rise and it is a golden opportunity to set back Congress and NCP in their traditional stronghold, but the ego of the party leaders and the fights on the number of seats each party will contest has taken the sheen out of the upcoming elections.

Instead of cornering the Congress-NCP government on their rampant corruption, the various scandals and the non-performance in the last 10 years, the alliance partners are busy fighting each other for the bigger share of the pie and in the process squandering a golden opportunity to finally oust the current regime and usher in a new era.

This is a growing trend in Indian Politics, the politics of opportunism which turns foes into friends and arch-enemies into best friends. If the Sena-BJP lose this opportunity to turn things around due to their infighting, then they will only have themselves to blame.
