The internet is going nuts over the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, we have every two bit star, their dog and even their ponies doing the challenge on video and posting on FaceBook. We have seen celebs and high profile CEOs challenging and daring each other to complete the challenge within 24 hours of it being raised.
It has become a phenomenon and while it has raised awareness for ALS and collected millions of dollars for research and funding for this disease, it also raises the question of wastage of precious portable water on frivolous showings. No disrespect to ALS and the associated deaths though, but the disease is not very common and the ratio of people dying due to lack of clean, drinking water today is much more than those dying off ALS.
Coming from a so- called developed country and seeing the problems being faced by people who trek for miles to get drinking water everyday it seems a tad ridiculous and stupid to waste a resource as precious as water to avoid contributing to charity and raising money for ALS.
But then it has always been the haves who make the news rather than the have nots and people always follow the loudest voice. So as long as the videos keep trending and the tweets and retweets keep happening, there is no end for the ongoing stupidity.
As for me, pouring a bucket of ice-cold water on my head does not hold any fondness in my heart and I would rather donate money to some worthwhile cause, save a bucket of water and use those ice-cubes in my glass of Whisky - it's less Risky!!!!
