Agneepath - The Movie

The title for this blog specifically titled the movie, so as not to confuse with the Agneepath cricket series, the only thing common between the two is that the main characters destruct in the end. In the cricket series the Indian team was never in contention, but then lets not talk about that considering the title mentions the movie Agneepath..

It was 1 of the most awaited movies of the year, and lets say the movie does not disappoint completely. First of all should not be compared with the original movie at all... coz lets be frank nobody and let me repeat that nobody can stand up to Amitabh in terms of that performance as Vijay Dinanath Chavan.... so it's unfair to expect Hritik to do the same. That said, the movie differs from the original in some key factors, if these factors are considered in the overall verdict then the movie comes across as very good.

First being the movie is much more darker as compared to the original that can be attributed to a large extent to Sanjay Dutt he's menacing as Kancha China, while Danny Dangozpa in the original was a suave & sophisticated villain, Dutt is much more earthy and uncouth, his screen presence speaks for itself, completely immoral, his actions comes across as larger than words in the movie. Those scenes that he has he completely takes them over.

Rishi Kapoor as Rauf Lala is another departure from the original. He's not the gentle hearted do-gooder that every Hindi movie is so fond of depicting, he's as cruel and immoral as they come. His lack of morality comes across with his actions, indulging in human trafficking, drugs and also taking sides which suit him, he's loyal to none but his own next of kin. A stand out performance from a person who has always done chocolate boy roles for bulk of his career, this role shows the depth Rishi has as an actor....

This makes us come to the protagonist role, but one of things that sets the movie apart is that there are not much redeeming characters to the protagonist, yes he's a do-gooder, but then thats all that he has by the way of empathy, he's a ruthless and as relentless as the antagonists in the movie. This is what makes the movie much more believable in the end.

Hrithik plays the role of Vijay Chavan with understated elegance. Trapped between two powerhouse performances by Sanjay & Rishi and carrying the expectations from the role played by the Big B in the original, he falters at some scenes, but largely holds himself together. While it is nowhere as good as the Big B's he manages to find his own in some key scenes. He's not a complete do-good-er, his character as shades of grey, when he goes around supporting Rauf Lala in his business of human trafficking and drugs, while having his eyes set on revenge against Kancha, he still alllies himself with him to get control of Lala's business.

Overall I'll rate Agneepath over and above Don 2. In my mind the movie scores better for the performances by the veterans and the overall tone of the movie is much more believable.
