Pandit Bhimsen Joshi: An Obituary

India lost a true musical genius today. Pandit Bhimsen Joshi passed away at 8:00 A.M at Pune. In the last few days the maestro suffering from ill health was on/off the ventilator. He was 89.

Panditji was best known by the newer generation for his rendering of Mile Sur Mera Tumhara in the National Integration music video produced by DD.

A exponent of the Kirana gharana, he never allowed himself to be limited to only Kirana, instead challenging and improving continuously.

A disciple of legendary Pandit Sawai Gandharva Maharaj of Kirana Gharana, Pt. Bhimsen Joshi acheived the highest accolades for his renditions of classical Hindustani music.

He was awarded the highest honor ever awarded to an Indian the Bharat Ratna in 2008.

The world as we know has gotten poorer with the passing away of this legend.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
